MTA Expands Real-Time Arrival Technology to all NYC Buses, a Recommendation from CUF’s Behind the Curb ReportThe Center’s 2011 Behind the Curb report recommended that the MTA install GPS devices on all city buses in order to make real-time arrival updates available to all riders. After piloting Bus Time in Staten Island and expanding to the Bronx and Manhattan last year, the MTA is now installing the service on Brooklyn and Queens buses.

Mayor de Blasio Adopts CUF Recommendation to Expand Low-Income EntrepreneurshipOur April 2013 Launching Low-Income Entrepreneurs study recommended that the city expand low-income entrepreneurship in New York City and provide an alternative pathway to the middle class for low-income New Yorkers. In his first State of the City speech, Mayor de Blasio announced plans to do just that.

We're pleased to report that Mayor de Blasio recently announced that his administration will build on one such innovation, the Young Men's Initiative.

CEO Adopts CUF Recommendation to Expand EITC for Childless Low-Income WorkersIn August 2011, the Center published The No Child Penalty which recommended expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit to low-income workers without children. We are pleased to report that this recommendation is being implemented by the city.

The report found that with middle-income jobs in decline, entrepreneurship offers an increasingly promising pathway out of poverty; but few low-income New Yorkers are currently taking this route to economic self-sufficiency.

CUF Influences Speaker Quinn’s New Transportation ProposalsCity Council Speaker Christine Quinn announced a series of new proposals to improve mass transit in New York City. Three of the proposals were influenced by our 2011 Behind the Curb report which found that New York City’s public transit service has not kept pace with recent job growth and transit ridership gains.

The proposal was sparked by our January 2013 Branches of Opportunity report about the increasingly important role that the city's public libraries are playing in communities around the five boroughs.
