NYC Libraries by the NumbersDespite declining funds and limited hours of service, New York City’s public libraries are seeing a surge in users and uses. Below we show where the growth is happening and how funding cuts in recent years have affected performance, and provide the city’s first branch-by-branch accounting of book circulation, program attendance and visits.

NYS Workforce Funding StreamsThese three tables from our Seeking a State Workforce Strategy report track public workforce development funds by program and relate these programs to three larger categories for investment: 1) adult education funding 2) workforce development funding and 3) college access and workforce services in higher education. The tables also indicate where programs receive their funding, what agency or department oversees them and how their funding has changed in the past five years.

CUF Influences City Council Response to 2016 BudgetEarlier this week, the City Council issued its response to Mayor de Blasio's preliminary budget. We are heartened that many of the proposals outlined in the response—from opening libraries six days a week to creating a year-round youth employment program—follow a number of our reports' recommendations.

Data from Re-Envisioning New York's Branch LibrariesCharts and tables from our Re-Envsioning New York's Branch Libraries report which found that while more New Yorkers than ever are using the city’s public libraries, a significant share of the branches suffer from major physical defects and are poorly configured for how New Yorkers are using libraries today. The report provides a comprehensive blueprint for bringing these vital community institutions into the 21st Century.

Data from Bridging the DisconnectCharts and tables from our Bridging the Disconnect report which found that while New York City is facing a youth unemployment crisis, the city’s youth workforce development programs reach only a fraction of those in need of help and are too often misaligned to the developmental needs of young New Yorkers.

CUF Influences Mayor's Plan to Refocus NYC’s Workforce Development System on Skills BuildingFor years, the Center for an Urban Future has been urging city officials to expand and improve the city’s workforce development system. In May 2014, Mayor de Blasio announced that the city would do just that with a Jobs for New Yorkers Task Force. The Center has been invited to facilitate the task force’s discussions.

CUF Report Leads to Major SBS, DOE, CUNY Program that Connects CTE Students with EmployersOur May 2008 report Schools That Work urged for stronger institutional support for CTE programs. SBS, DOE and CUNY ran with our recommendation in a big way.

CEO Adopts CUF Recommendation to Expand EITC for Childless Low-Income WorkersIn August 2011, the Center published The No Child Penalty which recommended expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit to low-income workers without children. We are pleased to report that this recommendation is being implemented by the city.
