In March 2016, the City Comptroller’s Red Tape Commission unveiled a new report outlining 60 specific ways that city agencies, the City Council, and the state to streamline government and make it easier for small businesses to succeed. The Commission prominently featured our 2015 Creative New York report within the chapter “New York City’s Non-Profit Economy,” using our research to draw attention to the size and challenges facing the city’s nonprofits. It quoted a number of recommendations from our study, including our ideas to better support individual artists by expanding access to affordable housing and workspaces, and providing better financial and administrative support to small and mid-sized arts organizations.
